The influence of statins on the course of acute ischemic stroke at the presence of metabolic syndrome

Objective – to study the clinical-pathogenetic efficiency of statins in patients suffering from acute ischemic
stroke depending on the presence of the metabolic syndrome (MS) and insulinresistance.
Methods and subjects. 104 patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke were examined: 55 with metabolic syndrome and 49 without it. In the current study the efficiency of a standard therapy without and with atorvastatin in a dose of 20 mg/day was compared. We evaluated degree of violation of neurological functions and disability, insulin-resistance, dyslipidemia, thrombocytes hemostasis, and vascular endothelial growth
Results. Atorvastatin application in the therapy for the patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke promotes
more expressed dynamic of clinical manifestation of disease with decrease of dyslipidemia, insulinresistance, violations thrombocytes hemostasis and the presence antiphospholipid antibodies in the blood. Moreover, after the course of treatment of the patients with MS above mentioned parameters were higher compared to the healthy individuals. This substantiates the advantage of long-term atorvastatin therapy.
Conclusions. Atorvastatin application in the therapy of the patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke
promotes an increase of clinical efficiency of treatment though the influence on the key pathogenetic mechanisms of the disease.
