Function impairments of a conductive division of a visual system at the patients with diabetes mellitus
T.M. MELNYK

Objective – to study a functional status of a conductive division of the visual system with application of neurophysiological methods at the patients with diabetes mellitus (DM).
Methods and subjects. Were observed 62 patients with DM 1 type and 62 patients with DM 2 type by means of
neurophysiologic method of registration visual evoked potentials (VEP). The patients were divided into four groups: first – 32 patients with DM 1 type without diabetic retinopathy (DR), second – 30 patients with DM 1 type with nonproliferative DR, third – 31 patients with DM 2 type without DR and fourth – 31 patients with DM 2 type with nonproloferative DR.
Results. At the patients with DM the typical changes of functioning of the central parts of the visual system were revealed. The changes mentioned both early, and late components VEP and reflecting activity specific and nonspecific afferent systems accordingly. Thus most lengthening the latent periods (LP) of components VEP, decrease of peaks amplitude (A), impairments of a typical VEP configuration was marked. It specifies impairments developing at various stages of the visual information processing. Functional impairments were determined both at the patients with an initial stage DR, and the patients without other. The correlation connections between duration LP of peaks N75, P100, and N145 and duration DM and compensation level of DM were revealed.
Conclusions. At the patients with DM the function impairments of a conductive division of the visual system
were established. These impairments can not be found with usual ophthalmic investigation. The increase of the LP and decrease of peak A P 100 are the most important for diagnostics of visual impairments due to DM. Functional impairments were determined at the patients without DR, on initial stage DR they are more expressed. The method of registration VEP can be used for diagnostics of brain impairments at the patients with DM, estimation the compensation level of DM and severity metabolic impairments at these patients. It is expedient to all patients with DM to include in a complex investigation a method of registration VEP for early diagnostics impairments of a brain functional status.
