Asterixis at cirrhotic patients with hepatic encephalopathy clinical features

Objective – to describe clinical features аnd determine severity of asterixis depending on hepatic encephalopathy stage.
Methods and subjects. 68 patients with hepatic cirrhosis aged 28 to 54 were examined. Examination included
psychodiagnostic and neurological examination; hepatic encephalopathy was revealed in 52 patients. Asterixis
severity was evaluated according to West Haven criteria. Patients were divided into three groups: 23 patients with latent encephalopathy, 16 patients with I stage hepatic encephalopathy, and 13 patients with II stage hepatic encephalopathy.
Results. Received data evidently shows dependence of asterixis severity on hepatic encephalopathy stage.
Conclusions. Evaluation of asterixis in these patients showed, that its severity increased together with severity of encephalopathy. Like in patients of the 1st group with latent encephalopathy asterixis of first degree was determined only in 2 patients out of 23. Number of patients with asterixis significantly increased in the 3rd group with II stage hepatic encephalopathy (11 patients out of 13 had asterixis of various severity.
